CETIM to Present RESURGENCE Technology at European Congress AEDyR 2025
The team from CETIM will present its pioneering research on Metal-Organic Framework (MOF)-based electrodes for industrial wastewater treatment and critical raw material recovery at the upcoming XIV International Congress of AEDyR. The congress, hosted by the Spanish Association of Desalination and Water Reuse (AEDyR), is recognized as Europe’s most influential biennial event focusing on desalination and water reuse. It will be held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, from June 24-26, 2025, under the theme ’60 years of innovation in Desalination and Reuse’.
The study introduces a novel approach utilizing MOFs as highly efficient and selective electrodes within capacitive technologies, such as Capacitive Deionization (CDI) and Flow-electrode Capacitive Deionization (FCDI). This innovative method addresseutilisings the dual challenge of treating complex industrial wastewater streams while simultaneously recovering valuable resources, specifically demonstrating high selectivity for critical raw materials like Magnesium (Mg).
The key innovation lies in the development of MOF-based electrodes exhibiting high specific capacitance coupled with remarkable selectivity. This selectivity is intrinsically linked to the unique, tunable three-dimensional structure of MOFs, allowing for targeted ion capture based on factors like ionic radius and diffusion rates.
Industrial wastewater often contains both contaminants and valuable resources, our MOF-based capacitive technology offers a promising pathway to tackle both issues simultaneously. By selectively removing and recovering critical materials like Magnesium, we can transform a waste stream into a resource stream, contributing significantly to water security and the circular economy. Presenting this at AEDyR 2025, a hub for innovation in our field, is an exceptional opportunity.
