Visits to the The Navigator Company paper mill in Figueira da Foz, Portugal

On September 5th, a team from Newasys, an activity of Strane Innovation Group, visited The Navigator Company’s paper mill in Figueira da Foz, Portugal. This visit marked a key milestone for the RESURGENCE project, an ambitious European initiative focused on advancing the circular economy and sustainability within the industrial sector.

The visit allowed Aïcha and Romain from the Newasys team to gather valuable data on the reuse of industrial effluents within the paper industry. This data collection aims to calculate circularity indicators, contributing to a more effective and sustainable management of water resources. The insights gained will support the wider objectives of the RESURGENCE project, which seeks to enhance resource efficiency and promote the transition to sustainable industrial practices across Europe.

Sustainable Practices in the Spotlight

During the visit, the team had the opportunity to explore Navigator’s operations and learn about the company’s commitment to sustainable production. The Navigator Company, a key player in the paper industry, has set ambitious environmental goals, including achieving carbon neutrality across its industrial complexes by 2035. This includes a focus on significant water conservation efforts, such as a target to reduce water usage in bleaching processes by 95% to produce pulp.

These initiatives align closely with the goals of the RESURGENCE project, which is dedicated to fostering sustainable development in European industries by leveraging the principles of the circular economy. By focusing on the reuse and recycling of materials and reducing waste, RESURGENCE aims to transform how industries operate, making them more resource-efficient and environmentally responsible.

A Step Towards a Circular Economy

By working closely with industrial partners, RESURGENCE is gathering insights and best practices that will be critical in driving the circular economy forward. The data collected during the visit will play a pivotal role in developing circularity indicators, which will help industries understand and improve their water management processes.

The Navigator Company’s dedication to sustainability is a shining example of how industrial processes can adapt to support environmental objectives. The company’s efforts to reduce water usage and achieve carbon neutrality are in line with the broader goals of the RESURGENCE project, demonstrating how industry-wide collaboration can drive positive environmental change.
